King Of Bokeh Pano Lenses?!

If you're looking for the holy grail of bokeh pano lenses then I may have found it. Nikon's new monster design 105mm f/1.4 is potentially the most interesting lens for this technique and here's why...

Of course it's pricey ($2200), not small (106mm long) or light (985g), but it's not bad considering it has the largest aperture of any lens under 135mm (75mm). Previously the only thing that could match it was the Zeiss Sonnar (A mount) 135mm f/1.8* (Sigma are launching their version of that lens very soon as well). However, this Nikon has a shorter focal length, making it potentially more attractive as a panorama lens (requires less images to stitch). 105mm also sits at the apex in my ideal focal length range (85-135) for the technique, making it a great compromise between distortion and tiring workflow.

* There are a couple of lenses that have an aperture even larger than this, but I am discounting these because, either their focal lengths are just too long (200mm f/2, 300mm f/2.8), or they're just too big and heavy to be desirable for this technique (Mitakon 135mm f/1.4).

You can see where this lens fits on my graph of awesome bokeh pano lenses (below). If you want to know more about this graph check out my page that explains what the colours mean in more detail here.

So, well done Nikon for making such an interesting lens. I'm not sure if you ever intended it for this technique (I seriously doubt it), but never mind. Maybe one day I will get to use one for it.
